This post is late. Sometimes I am better at keeping others on track than remembering my own blog. It’s not a new phenomenon. I’m pretty sure that every teacher I ever had wrote something like “daydreams too much,” “easily distracted,” or “doesn’t finish her assignments.” Nowadays, they’d probably say I have ADD. When I was a kid I would respond that daydreams are more interesting. Now I simply add too many things to my “to do” list. There, that’s my big confession. That, and the discovery that when I don’t give myself days off (including mental time off), my brain and body conspire and go on strike. Don’t ask me why, but this reminds me of my recent journey to Wisconsin.
My husband and I decided that we would take the Wisconsin Writers Association’s Fall Conference as an excuse for a road trip. I was honored and lucky enough to be giving a presentation. So, we loaded up the car with some books, flyers, and all the conference supplies, a few clothes, the ever-important laptop, and the dogs (of course). After three days of driving through corn fields, we were there in Stevens Point. Despite summer’s decision to hang out a bit longer, we had a great time. The WWA rocks! (Am I dating myself with that one?) Not only did I attend some great talks and workshops, and meet more people, I also got to spend some time with other Scribe Hive authors: E.L. Winters and Ted Fearson. It was a great conference, that I recommend. Even the dogs had a blast. But it was over all too quickly. Before we knew it, we were back on the road.
You know, you just never know where life can take you. Our route home took us through wonders like Blue Earth, MN (Jolly Green Giant and Little Sprout); Wall, SD (Wall Drug and a giant Jackalope), and the Badlands. Believe me, these are perfect spots to visit for writers, artists, and those who enjoy quirkier moments. It helps that it’s the off season and none of these were busy. My husband — forgive me for saying that twice in one blogpost, but it is still new and I like the way it feels — always keep an eye out for new and interesting places to visit, explore, and provide inspiration.
On our first journey together in late 2021 to early 2022 (a 5.5-month road trip that I sometimes refer to as the 4th date), I was able to complete the first draft of my first book. For someone who was once the kid who didn’t finished what she started, I’d say I’ve come a long way. I’m now about halfway through the third (and final?) book of the Legends of Star Junction and I run this amazing publishing cooperative with my hive-mates and amazing authors. I love this journey.
Don’t forget to play,
Serra

You are so brave and inspiring.
