So, here I sit, day 5 editing my first draft. Before it’s even finished. Yeah, that’s right, I’m a badass rule breaker. They, whoever they are, say when you’re writing your first draft you should just ‘vomit’ on the page. Gross, I know. But their point is to just get it down on the page, unedited, spelling mistakes be damned. But I ran into an issue I haven’t come across before. I was stuck. I mean, really stuck. I got over 63,000 words into the sequel to The Ghostwriter and… nothing. Begged my muses to come back and all I got was crickets. Nothing. While recovering from a recent nasty cold, I decided to just go back and read it from the beginning, hoping that would pique the interest of the reluctant muses. What it did was open my eyes to a couple of plot holes, timing issues, and general untidiness in the manuscript. I decided as ‘they’ didn’t seem to be watching me, I’d just go for it. And it’s helping. I’m almost to the point where I had recently become stuck, and I feel the hesitant interest of the muses tapping on my shoulder. One or two more days ought to do the trick. I’ll lure them in with confidence and maybe a glass of Blackberry Merlot. So close, I’ll tell them. We’re so close. Only about 20-30 thousand more words to go. Surely, we can come up with that, right? Only time and breaking the rules will tell.
