Serra Wildheart

Magical Realism; Inspired Fiction

Serra Wildheart’s debut novel, Return to Star Junction, released November, 2023. Her careers ranged from Tech to Wine until the call to write spoke louder than the rest. Serra brings the heart of experience — success, grief, joy, and picking up the pieces when it all crashes down — and alchemizes it to soul stories. Travels to Peru, France, and throughout the United States have colored her world. Teaching Reiki, facilitating healing circles, and coaching enrich her life. But mostly, she writes stories from the heart with the hope to touch your soul. When she is not doing that, she enjoys cooking, hiking, painting, and hanging out with her dogs and beloved DogDad.

My Story

Have you ever let yourself be distracted from your dreams? Even when you knew so deeply what you were meant to do? I’ve known I am a storyteller, a poet, a lyricist, since I was a child. I said the words often enough in high-school. I took the creative writing classes, film and tv, acting, screenwriting, etc. I took them all, but I majored in English/American Studies to have the safer degree. I’ve worked in technology, magazine publishing, customer service, retail management, and in the wine industry. I’ve been a private chef and was halfway to being a Master Sommelier. My writing skills always came in handy, but I didn’t put them first. And my soul ached. It was like spending a life “in search of” instead of being. So many gifts of change along the way. Obstacles, shocks, losses, and sudden turns that took me on a journey of learning to say yes to my Being. To say “Yes” to writing. Expression. And now that I have begun, now that I am here, there is no turning back from this magical world. But then, why would I want to do that?

Genre

“Genre? Honestly, I’m not entirely sure I write in a particular genre. Sure, my wiser writing friends tell me that I write Magical Realism or Nature-Based Magical Realism, Low-Fantasy, and maybe even Urban Fiction. There are elements of all of that. I have always bristled against categories, despite how useful they can be. I prefer to think I write Inspired Fiction, and perhaps with more practice and skill, literary fiction or at least, upward fiction. Of course, there are a few kids books in the works, and perhaps some non-fiction. I write what inspires me and do my best not to limit it.”

“I’ve been creating stories since I was a child. A lot of feel good high-drama amongst the stuffed and glass animals in my room. I wrote my first extremely short story in the 4th grade for a Halloween assignment. Lyrics, poetry, and stories have fed my soul ever since. Of course, knowing I was meant to be a writer and that I function better in life when I actively write is not always the same as being a writer. It is only in the last few years that I have committed to myself and the writing that I always felt inside. “

"The first piece I ever wrote,

“The first piece I ever wrote, completed, and loved was in college. I wrote a short story, “Grace.” Also, it was published in the school’s Literary Magazine. Sometimes I think I need to find it and play with it again. Also, some of my lyrics/poems are forever a part of my being.”

I’m inspired by Life

“I’m inspired by Life. Movement. People. Nature. Fall leaves staining walkways in the rain. Hummingbirds hovering in front of me. Flowers blooming. Mountains, rivers, trees, and the stars in the sky. There is so much love and magic and beauty all around us. I am inspired to reflect as much of that as I can for others to enjoy. Even just a glimmer that brightens someones day, or opens a pathway. ”

Writing the first book

“Writing the first book has taught me patience, perseverance, and trust. I had to realize that setting realistic goals for myself was more helpful than fantasies of being done quickly. I also discovered just how helpful a writing group can be for accountability and support. And, on the editing and publishing side of things, I’ve had to learn discernment. Not everyone claiming expertise actually has it. Discernment over discouragement. And, at the end of the day, I learned to trust my voice, my story, and my ability to tell it.”

What I love about writing

“What I love about writing — Reflecting beauty, hope, love, and healing. Transmitting joy. Creating worlds and adventures. I love when I can get out of my head so much that thousands of words flow out and I don’t feel like time has passed. Those are often the words that don’t require editing. The ones that shine brighter than the others. I love that I could write something that others enjoy. That moves them in some way, even if it is just to say “that was good.””
